Italian football legend and attacking midfielder/forward who captained Juventus for over a decade and won the 2006 World Cup with Italy
Alessandro Del Piero was born in Conegliano in 1974 and began at Padova (1991–93) before Juventus signed him in 1993. He spent 19 seasons at the club (1993–2012), making 705 appearances — the club record — scoring 290 goals and providing 176 assists. He won 6 Serie A titles, the Champions League (1996) and Intercontinental Cup (1996). He earned 91 Italy caps scoring 27 goals, winning the 2006 World Cup in Germany where his late goal against Germany in the semi-final sealed Italy's passage. He moved to Sydney FC (2012–14), Delhi Dynamos (2015) and Melbourne City (2015–16) to wind down. He scored 341 career goals and provided 283 assists across 879 appearances. His top speed of 30.1 km/h and 10.2 km per game reflect a player whose genius was technical rather than physical. He scored 49 direct free-kicks in Serie A — among the most in the competition's history. Juventus retired his number 10 shirt upon his departure. The curved, outside-of-the-boot finish that sends the ball across goal became known as the Del Piero zone. He was Serie A top scorer in 1997–98.
