David Maurice Robinson was born in Key West, Florida in 1965. He played college basketball at the US Naval Academy — where he was obligated to serve two years in the military before entering the NBA. San Antonio Spurs selected him first overall in the 1987 NBA Draft and waited two years for him. His 14-season career produced two NBA championships (1999, 2003) and the regular season MVP award in 1995. He won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1992. He won the Rookie of the Year in 1990. He was selected to 10 All-Star games. He won Olympic gold with the Dream Team in 1992 and with the 1996 team. He won the scoring title in 1994. His partnership with Tim Duncan — the Twin Towers — produced San Antonio's first two championships. He was named to the NBA 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. Away from basketball he established the Carver Academy charter school in San Antonio using $9 million of his own money.
