Rugby World Cup winner 2x — the smallest, fastest and most dangerous finisher in world rugby.
Cheslin Kolbe was born in Kraaifontein, near Cape Town, South Africa in 1993. At 5ft 9in he was considered too small for international rugby until his performances could not be ignored. He is of mixed Cape Malay and Dutch ancestry — his career representing the transformation of South African rugby's demographics. He scored tries in both the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup Finals. His evasion ability — the sidestep at full pace, the ability to beat multiple defenders — is the finest in world rugby. He won two Rugby World Cups with the Springboks and the Top 14 with Toulouse. He is considered the most dangerous finisher in the game.
Scoring two tries in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final against England, helping South Africa secure a 32-12 victory and their third World Cup title.
How They Played
Kolbe is renowned for his blistering pace, exceptional footwork, and ability to beat defenders in tight spaces despite his relatively small frame. His low center of gravity and agility make him extremely difficult to tackle, while his acceleration allows him to exploit the smallest gaps in defense. He combines his attacking prowess with solid defensive skills and reliable goal-kicking ability.
Lasting Impact
Kolbe has redefined what it means to be a successful winger in modern rugby, proving that smaller players can excel at the highest level through skill and speed rather than just size and power.
