American basketball player who starred at University of Colorado before successful NBA career, winning NBA Finals MVP with Detroit Pistons in 2004.
Chauncey Billups was born in Denver, Colorado in 1976. He attended the University of Colorado — choosing to stay in his home state — and became the most decorated player in the program's modern history. He averaged 16.8 points and 4.6 assists per game across his three active seasons and was the Big Eight and then Big 12 Player of the Year. His Colorado career made him one of the most watched point guards in the country by his junior year. He declared for the draft after his junior season. Boston Celtics selected him third overall in the 1997 NBA Draft. His early NBA years were nomadic — he played for five teams in five seasons — before Detroit Pistons signed him in 2002. The rest became history: two NBA championships, one Finals MVP and a career full of clutch performances that earned him the nickname Mr. Big Shot. His Colorado career — developing in relative obscurity before emerging as a top-three pick — established the competitive foundation on which those professional achievements were built. He is the most successful NBA player to have attended the University of Colorado.
He was selected third overall in the 1997 NBA Draft after just two seasons at Colorado.
