Cătălina Ponor was born on 20 August 1987 in Constanța, Romania, and took up gymnastics at four after passing a gym with her grandmother and asking to look inside. She joined the Romanian national training center in 2002 under legendary coaches Octavian Bellu and Mariana Bitang, making her international debut at the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim with silver medals in the team, beam, and floor events. Ponor's breakthrough came at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she helped Romania defend its team title before winning individual gold on both the balance beam and floor exercise, becoming the first female gymnast since Daniela Silivaș in 1988 to win three gold medals at a single Olympics. Her floor exercise victory margin of 0.188 points was, at the time, the largest recorded in the event's history. Ponor retired in December 2007 due to ongoing injuries, but made a remarkable comeback in 2011 - even after undergoing surgery to correct a congenital heart defect - to qualify for a second Olympics at London 2012, where she won bronze with the Romanian team and silver in the floor exercise, eight years after her first Olympic triumph.
