The youngest world number one in ATP history — the Wimbledon champion at 20 who may become the greatest ever.
Carlos Alcaraz Garfia was born in El Palmar, Murcia, Spain in 2003. He became the youngest player in ATP history to reach world number one, achieving the ranking at 19 years and 4 months in September 2022 after winning the US Open. He has since won four Grand Slam titles across three different surfaces — the US Open (2022), Wimbledon (2023 and 2024) and the French Open (2024) — before his 22nd birthday. His Wimbledon victory in 2024, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final, made him the first player since Rod Laver to win French Open and Wimbledon in the same calendar year. His combination of physical attributes — explosive speed, strength and excellent serve — with technical quality and the competitive mentality instilled by coach Juan Carlos Ferrero makes him the most complete young player the game has produced. He is mentored by Rafael Nadal and coached by Ferrero, who was himself a world number one. He is the most likely player to challenge Djokovic's Grand Slam record. Alcaraz produced two seasons for the ages. In 2025 he won the French Open by saving three championship points against Jannik Sinner in the longest Roland Garros final in history - five hours 29 minutes - then beat Sinner again to take a second US Open, finishing the year as world number one with eight titles and a 71-9 record. On 1 February 2026 he beat Novak Djokovic in four sets to win his first Australian Open, becoming, at 22 years and 272 days, the youngest man in tennis history to complete the career Grand Slam - eclipsing Don Budge - with seven majors spread across all four venues.
Becoming the youngest men's world No. 1 in ATP rankings history at age 19 years and 4 months in September 2022.
