Benjamin Wallace was born in White Hall, Alabama in 1974 and attended Virginia Union University — a Division II historically Black college — before going undrafted in the 1996 NBA Draft. He was signed as a free agent and became the greatest undrafted player in NBA history. He won the Defensive Player of the Year award four times (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) — tied with Dikembe Mutombo for the most in NBA history. He was selected to four All-Star games. He was named to the All-NBA Defensive First Team six times. He was the defensive anchor of the Detroit Pistons team that won the 2004 NBA championship, holding LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal to the lowest scoring averages of his playoff careers in a single postseason. He averaged 5.7 points — a scoring average that understates his enormous impact on winning. His Afro hairdo and headband became iconic. His career stands as the definitive proof that defence and rebounding, rather than scoring, can create an all-time level career. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
