Teófilo Cubillas is regarded as the greatest South American footballer of the 1970s not called Pelé or Kempes. His performances at the 1970 and 1978 World Cups — scoring 10 goals combined — remain the benchmark for Peruvian football excellence. He was named in the All-Star Team of both tournaments, a unique distinction. He scored 26 goals in 81 Peru appearances.

He is the only player to be named in the All-Star Team at two different World Cups.
