Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes, known as Pauleta, was born in Ponta Delgada, Azores on 28 April 1973. One of Portugal's greatest ever goalscorers, Pauleta was a classic mobile centre-forward with exceptional movement, intelligent positioning and reliable finishing. He came through Beira-Mar and Sporting CP before a prolific spell at Deportivo La Coruña and then Bordeaux, where he was outstanding. Paris Saint-Germain signed him in 2003 and he spent five seasons at the Parc des Princes, becoming the club's all-time leading scorer at the time with 109 goals. He won Ligue 1 with Bordeaux in 1999. For Portugal he earned 81 caps and scored 47 goals — a national record that stood until Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed it.
