Johan Cruyff

Johan Cruyff was born in Amsterdam in 1947, grew up near Ajax's De Meer stadium and joined his academy at ten. His Ajax career (1964–1973) produced 3 European Cups, 6 Eredivisie titles and 190 goals in 318 appearances. He moved to Barcelona (1973–1978) where he won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, scoring 60 goals in 143 appearances. He earned 48 Netherlands caps scoring 33 international goals, leading his country to the 1974 World Cup final — the most influential tournament performance by any player who did not win the competition. He recorded a top speed of 31.2 km/h and covered 10.5 km per game. His 402 career goals across 797 appearances undersell his creative influence — his 198 assists were equally significant. He won the Ballon d'Or three times (1971, 1973, 1974). Late career spells at LA Aztecs (1979), Washington Diplomats (1980), Levante (1981), Ajax (1981–83) and Feyenoord (1983–84) demonstrated remarkable longevity. As Barcelona manager (1988–96) he delivered 4 consecutive La Liga titles and the European Cup (1992), creating the foundation of the tiki-taka philosophy that Guardiola later globalised.
