The first American to win the Tour de France — and the winner of the most dramatic final stage in Tour history, coming from 50 seconds down to win by 8 seconds.

Greg LeMond was the first non-European to win the Tour de France. His 1989 Tour victory — in which he started the final time trial 50 seconds behind Laurent Fignon and won by 8 seconds — is the most dramatic final stage in Tour history. He won three Tour titles despite being shot in a hunting accident in 1987 that left 35 lead pellets near his heart, almost ending his career.

He came back from being shot in a hunting accident — with 35 lead pellets near his heart — to win two more Tour de France titles.
