Denis Compton was the most popular English cricketer of his generation and one of the few sportsmen to have been a genuine star in two sports. He played professional football for Arsenal and England while scoring over 38,000 first-class cricket runs. His 1947 season — in which he scored 3,816 runs with 18 centuries, both records — is considered the finest individual season in English cricket history.
