England's dazzling winger who became a folk hero in Marseille — one of the most elegant dribblers English football has produced.

Chris Waddle was one of the most naturally gifted wingers England has ever produced. His two seasons at Marseille transformed him from a good Premier League player into a genuinely world-class one — he was voted French Player of the Year twice and helped Marseille win three consecutive league titles. His penalty miss against West Germany in the 1990 World Cup semi-final is one of football's most poignant moments.

He was voted the best player outside England and Italy in the late 1980s — yet played most of his career in the Second Division.
